João Pedro da Ponte holds a PhD in Education from the University of Georgia (USA) (1984). He was the first Director of the Institute of Education at the University of Lisbon. He is currently Professor Emeritus of this Institute and has been a visiting professor at universities in Brazil, Spain, and the United States.

He has coordinated research projects in Mathematics Education, teacher education, and digital technologies, and has supervised 61 doctoral dissertations and 95 master’s theses and reports. His research focuses on professional practice, teachers’ knowledge, and professional development, with particular attention to lesson study and the teaching and learning of mathematical topics.

He has published books, book chapters, and articles in high-impact international journals and regularly collaborates in initiatives of the Portuguese Association of Mathematics Teachers.
